Benjamin Kofi Quashie, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders in South Africa, has reaffirmed that illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, will not be tolerated under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Speaking on Class 91.3FM on Friday, February 7, 2025, Mr. Quashie emphasized that tackling galamsey is a top priority for the President. He revealed that law enforcement agencies have already begun cracking down on illegal miners operating in forest reserves and water bodies.

“We have directed law enforcement agencies to systematically eliminate illegal mining activities. This initiative commenced immediately after our election victory. The destruction caused by galamsey is alarming, and President Mahama is determined to end it,” he stated.

Mr. Quashie underscored the long-term consequences of illegal mining, stressing its adverse impact on both current and future generations.

“When we destroy our environment—our water bodies and forest reserves—we compromise the well-being of generations yet unborn,” he said.

He added that responsible leadership entails safeguarding the country’s natural resources rather than prioritizing short-term gains.

“A true leader lays a strong foundation for future generations, even if they themselves may not reap the immediate benefits. This is precisely what President Mahama is committed to achieving,” he noted.

Addressing the challenges in combating galamsey, Mr. Quashie acknowledged that political interference has often hampered efforts. However, he maintained that under the directives of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, the government is taking a firm stand against the menace.

“It does not matter who you are or what role you play in the country or the NDC—if you are engaged in galamsey, the party will come after you with full force,” he warned.

He further advocated for the expulsion of individuals involved in illegal mining from the party, declaring, “Anyone found engaging in galamsey should not be accommodated within the NDC. We must be resolute in our stance.”

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining, Mr. Quashie expressed confidence that with clear directives from the President to sector ministers, Regional Coordinating Councils, and other key stakeholders, the fight against galamsey will be intensified.

“The government will employ its full authority to clamp down on perpetrators, regardless of their affiliations—even if they belong to our party,” he asserted.

He also addressed concerns about alleged party members engaging in illegal mining, issuing a stern warning to desist from such activities.

“It baffles me when I hear claims that some of our party members are involved in galamsey. That will not happen under President Mahama or any future NDC administration. We campaigned on ending illegal mining and reforming the sector, and we will stand by that commitment,” he concluded.
