The Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Mrs Mary Chinery-Hesse, has welcomed Ms Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, as Chair of the reconstituted University Governing Council.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, inaugurated the new Council on Friday, 25 April 2025.
The reconstituted body, is chaired by Ms Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, a former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, and currently the Presidential Legal Counsel.

Ms Brew, a respected lawyer from the law firm of Lithur Brew & Company, served as Attorney-General during the first administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
She now continues her distinguished service as Presidential Legal Counsel.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, introduced Ms Brew at the inauguration ceremony and highlighted the diverse expertise the new Council members bring to the University.
During her meeting with the Chancellor, Ms Brew pledged to provide effective leadership guided by the University’s strategic priorities.

The Chancellor expressed confidence in Ms Brew’s leadership and urged the Council to align its efforts with industry needs to ensure the University produces graduates who are competitive globally.
Also present at the ceremony was the Registrar, Mrs Emelia Agyei-Mensah, who serves as Secretary to the Council.
In his address, the Minister for Education tasked Council members with working assiduously to enhance the University’s reputation as a leading global institution of higher education.
In her acceptance speech, the Council Chairperson lauded the University of Ghana as a bedrock of academic excellence and pledged to collaborate with management in a spirit of commitment and visionary leadership.
Other members of the Council, include Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (Vice-Chancellor), Naa Dr Alhassan Andani, Dr Kwesi Amakye-Boateng, Ms Precious Kyei Bonsu, Dr Abdul Karim Hatsu, Ms Doris Kisiwa Ansah, Professor Nana Akua Anyidoho, and Mr Michael Owusu Ansah.

The rest are, Mr John Dadzie Mensah, Professor Folasade Tolulope, Reverend Father Stephen Owusu Sekyere, Mr George Agyekum Donkor, Ms Tina Sackeyfio, Major Daniel Ablorh-Quarcoo (Rtd), Mrs Yvette Adounvo Atekpe, Dr Inusah Abdul-Nasiru, Mr Maradona Adjei Yeboah, Mr Bright Amansiah, and Mr Benjamin Nkumsah.
Marietta Brew, is the Managing Partner of Lithur Brew & Company. She holds an LLB from the University of Ghana and was called to the Ghana Bar in 1994.
She also holds a graduate diploma in Law and Development from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands.
She joined Lithur Brew & Company in 2000, as a shareholder and director. An experienced litigator, her areas of expertise include commercial law, transactions, and general corporate advisory services.
Following 19 years of legal practice, she was appointed Attorney-General and Minister for Justice of the Republic of Ghana, serving from February 2013 until January 2017.
She returned to her legal practice with a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of public sector institutions and their operations.
As Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, she served as the Government’s chief legal adviser and represented the Presidency, the State, and various ministries and agencies in major transactions.
She appeared before the highest courts in Ghana and leading international tribunals, including the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
A former member of the General Legal Council, she contributed significantly to legal training and professional discipline. In her ministerial role, she oversaw the drafting and presentation of legislation to Parliament and supervised the administration of the Ministry of Justice with quiet distinction.
