The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operational Support (NAIMOS) Taskforce on Thursday disrupted a large-scale illegal mining operation at the Cocoa Research Centre in Bunsu, Eastern Region.
Authorities say the team moved in around 7:20 a.m. and found extensive destruction of land within cocoa farms at Section E Site 3 in the Fanteakwa South District.
According to officials, the illegal miners fled upon spotting the Taskforce vehicles approaching the site, abandoning heavy machinery in their rush to escape.

NAIMOS seized two excavators and one bulldozer, which had been used to degrade portions of the research centre’s protected lands.
The operation forms part of ongoing national efforts to curb illegal mining and protect cocoa-producing areas.
