The Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has announced the suspension of its indefinite strike which commenced on June 10, 2024.
The decision to pause the industrial action comes as the union prepares for pivotal discussions with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) slated for Friday, June 14, 2024.
The suspension follows a series of interventions from key stakeholders, including an appeal from the Minister for National Security and an invitation from the FWSC to return to the negotiation table. The advice from the union’s parent body, in light of the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) recent ruling, and the vocal concerns of the Ghanaian public have also played a role in this resolution.
The Divisional Executives Council in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 12 indicated that the FWSC had assured them of their willingness to act in good faith in their subsequent engagements.
“However, this gesture will be put to the test on Friday, June 14, 2024. Members are therefore assured that, if at the close of negotiations on Friday, the government fails to demonstrate true faith by granting us Institution Specific Allowances, we would not be hesitant to return to our industrial action; this must be noted,” it added.
The council therefore appealed to its members to report to work on Thursday, June 10, 2024.
“We appreciate your unprecedented massive solidarity and compliance following the declaration of the strike action. The action has really made a tremendous impact. However, we anticipate favourable outcomes within the shortest possible time.”
It also cautioned the FWSC to demonstrate good faith as it gets back to the negotiation table in the interest of industrial harmony.
