A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Alfred Ababio Kumi popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has been picked up by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and operatives of the National Security.

It is unclear what his crime is but the arrest The New Republic has gathered he was arrested on the morning of Friday May 23, 2025.

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, made the arrest public on his social media handle, Facebook.

The post which has attracted thousands of comments and reactions, called on the party member to throng the home of the alleged suspect to offer support, to one of their own, in a typical “you touch one, you touch all” fashion, as preached by minority leader, Alex Afenyo-Markin.

According to Kodua, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer stormed the residence of Kumi together with National Security officers.

“All patriots should rush to Adenta Kumi’s House. Over 20 C.I.D and NS officers are there to pick him up”, he posted.

A different post from the Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo constituency, Vincent Ekow Assafuah also supported what Kodua Frimpong said with a post.

He said “About 3 hours ago, Alfred Ababio Kumi popularly known a Adenta Kumi was picked up at his residence by 8 armed me believed to be officers of the National Intelligence Bureau. 6 of the AK-47-wielding men were in masks.

This Rambo-style actions by government continue to raise concerns that bother on free speech and good governance”.

Kumi’s mother Nana Ama Owusu, has reportedly confirmed the arrest of her son on Friday.

“We saw about eight armed operatives arrived at the residence while he was taking his bath. They said they only wanted to speak with him, but ended up taking him away.” she lamented.

Adenta Kumi, a failed parliamentary aspirant, has been in the news days ago after he petitioned President John Mahama to stop the ongoing petition against the removal of the Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Araba Sackey Torknornoo, who is on suspension following the establishment of prima facie case against her.

The prima facie was established after three petitions were presented for Justice Torkornoo’s removal.

In the case of Kumi, he had alleged in his petition that, some of the 5-member committee, set up to look into the CJ petitions, were seen at a public place to conspire for the removal of the CJ.

He had alleged that the chairman of the committee and a Supreme Court judge, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, was part of the meeting but it turned out to be false.

Another charge in his petition was that a Supreme Court judge, Justice Yoni Kulendi who was part of the meeting was part of the committee but evidence that has emerged shows otherwise.

He had claimed the two justices had the meeting with one of the lawyers of the one of the petitioners, Thaddeus Sory, which also turned out to be untrue.

Even though the justices met Sory at the place, he appeared to have gone there with a different mission.

Aside shaking hands with Justice Kulendi, the other justice appeared not to have even noticed Sory and so after the gesture, he had to respectfully go to their table to greet Justice Adibu-Asiedu for split seconds.

He quickly returned to sit on his table with his companion, who has now been named as Kotei Dzani, a former Council of State member eating, before the justice entered the place. At least from the video, the individuals did not sit together to as claimed in the petition.

But Kumi in his petition said “The meeting between Justices Pwamang, Kulendi and Asiedu with Thaddeus Sory clearly has destroyed the integrity of the process and reduced public confidence in the process so far.

Justice Pwamang is known to be interested in becoming the Chief Justice following your election as President. Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu is also on record to have actively lobbied to be the Chief Justice after the exit of Justice Anin Yeboah”, Kumi asserted.

A video of the said meeting has however been made public for the public scrutiny.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) director for legal affairs and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamekloe, first issued the video indicating the claims against the judges by Kumi were unfounded.

According to reports, two out of the three who met had marked their birthdays apart days back and so they only met to celebrate their special days and nothing else.
