-Debra Sets Strict Tone for Wayward Appointees
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama’s appointees, cautioning them to maintain proper conduct or face dire consequences during the administration’s tenure.
Debrah emphasized that while President Mahama is known for his gentle demeanor and accessibility, no appointee will be spared if found engaging in misconduct while serving as public officials.
Appointees were urged to steer clear of inappropriate behavior, as Debrah made it clear that even personal relationships with the president would not shield them from disciplinary action, including potential dismissal from government positions.
At the launch of a code of conduct for executive appointees on May 5, Debrah emphasized the importance of adhering to rules and regulations akin to running a boarding school. He stressed the need for appointees to study the code diligently to avoid crossing the line and facing repercussions.
The code applies to various high-ranking officials under the Executive, including ministers, CEOs, as well as the President and Vice-President themselves. Debrah underscored that when it comes to dismissing offending appointees, no amount of persuasion or influence, even from the president’s close associates, would sway the decision.
Appointees were urged to act with integrity and accountability, with Debrah referencing an incident where access to the president would be restricted only when an appointee was being removed from their position.
President Mahama emphasized the significance of the code of conduct, designed to instill discipline and ethical standards within the government. The document prohibits appointees from accepting gifts or favours that may compromise their duties and forbids the use of government funds for personal expenses.
The President highlighted the enforceability of the code, emphasizing that all officials under his administration would be held to its standards without exceptions. Ethical boundaries must be upheld, and transparency in handling gifts and expenditures is paramount according to the guidelines outlined in the document.
