Notable Ghanaian personalities who left us in 2025

It is the last day of the year 2025.

Some notable Ghanaians in various fields including politics and entertainment did not live to see the end of the year.

Some of these personalities are:

  • Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings

The former First Lady, whose husband is Ghana’s longest-serving head of state, died on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, after a short illness. She was buried on Friday, November 28 after a state funeral.

  • Daddy Lumba

Real name Charles Kwadwo Fosu, the Highlife music icon died on Saturday, July 26, 2025 after battling a long illness. His burial rather generated controversy as two women tussled over who is the rightful widow. It was after this matter was cleared that an Accra High Court ordered his funeral at the Heroes Park at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and his burial on Saturday, December 13, 2026.

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah

The Minister of Defence was among eight personalities who died in a helicopter crash at Adansi-Akrofuom on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 on their way to a government function. A mass funeral was held for all the eight victims on Friday, August 15 after a DNA test in South Africa confirmed the charred bodies. A special funeral was held at the Jackson Park in Koforidua on Saturday, December 13 for him.

  • Dr Murtala Ibrahim Mohammed

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central was also a victim of the helicopter crash. He doubled as the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation. He was, however, one of two Muslim victims buried on Sunday, August 10 in accordance with Islamic customs.

  • Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru

One of the Muslim victims of the helicopter crash, Alhaji Muniru was a Deputy National Security Coordinator until that fateful moment. He had served as Northern and Upper East regional minister as well as Minister of Food and Agriculture in the past.

  • Dr Samuel Sarpong

Dr Samuel Sarpong was a former Ashanti Region minister, who served the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in various capacities. Also a victim of the helicopter crash in his home region, Dr Sarpong had been appointed the Board Chairman of the Cocoa Processing Company on the morning of his death. He was the First National Vice Chairman of the NDC.

  • Ernest Kumi
Ernest Kumi

Another politician whose sudden death sent shock chills down the spine of many was the Akwatia MP. Then New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker died on Monday, July 7 after a short illness. He was buried five months later, on Saturday, December 6, at Akyem-Wenchi.

  • Joseph Ade Coker

The former Greater Accra Region NDC Chairman died on Saturday, May 31 after a long illness. He had ventured into politics after a sterling career in club football administration in Ghana. He was buried on Friday, August 1, 2025.

  • Dr Amadu Sulley

Dr Amadu Sulley served as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Ghana (EC). He died on Saturday, March 1 and was buried the following day in accordance with Islamic tradition.

  • Mawuli Semevo

The veteran actor died on Thursday, February 20 after suffering burns in a domestic fire accident. He was receiving treatment at the Ridge Hospital in Accra but did not survive. He was laid to rest in April.

  • Sam Pee Yalley

A veteran politician, Ambassador Sam Pee Yalley died on Sunday, April 6 after battling illness. Sam Pee Yalley had led the Professionals Forum (Pro Forum) of the NDC and had served in previous governments of the party as Ghana’s High Commissioner to India and the head of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA). He was laid to rest on Saturday, August 2.

  • Apostle Kwadwo Safo

The inventor-cum-religious leader died on Thursday, September 11 is yet to be buried but his 40-day observance drew a lot of mourners to the venue grounds. He founded the Kristo Asafo Church and led several inventions. He was also a well-known entrepreneur.

  • Alhaji Asoma Banda

Another business magnate, Alhaji Asoma Banda died on Saturday, March 1 after a long illness. The Chief Executive Officer of Antrak Group of Companies was over 90 years old. He was laid to rest near a mosqu he funded at Airport Residential Area.

  • Dr Mohammed ben Abdellah

The renowned playwright died on Thursday, September 18 at 81. The theatre luminary had also served in some political offices under the PNDC regime. He was laid to rest a day later in accordance with Islamic rites.
