Veteran lawmaker Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has praised the parliamentary Minority for navigating difficult circumstances with dedication and resilience.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, the former Majority Leader drew parallels between the current situation and the NPP’s early days in 1997. At that time, the party held just 61 seats in a 200-member Parliament, later joined by allies and an independent, bringing their total to 67 – slightly above one-third of the House.
“Today, the ruling party enjoys a two-thirds majority, and the NPP alone is in a position similar to what we faced in 1997,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said. “It is a difficult enterprise, but the Minority is doing its best under very challenging circumstances.”
He emphasised the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and strategic engagement in ensuring the opposition continues to hold the government accountable, despite the numerical disadvantage.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s reflections highlight the enduring challenges faced by parliamentary minorities in Ghana’s evolving democratic landscape.
