Two prominent figures in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have issued a joint call to the leadership for the full reinstatement of all members who were previously expelled from the party for various reasons.
MP for the Okaikoi Central constituency, Patrick Yaw Boamah, and former presidential aspirant Ken Agyapong have individually made appeals to the party’s hierarchy to extend forgiveness to those who were forced out in past years.
Boamah emphasized the importance of inviting back wrongly dismissed party loyalists to bolster the NPP’s ranks and fortify preparations for the upcoming 2028 general election. The lawmaker urged the current executive to embrace all former members, particularly those who were unjustly expelled, to foster unity and strength within the party.
Backing this plea, seasoned NPP financier and former MP for Assin Central constituency Ken Agyapong highlighted specific individuals, including former national chairman Paul Afoko and founding member John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, as deserving recipients of the proposed amnesty.
During a recent event in the Western Region, Agyapong emphasized the significance of reconciling with expelled members for the party’s overall stability and peace. He underscored the need to set aside differences and extend a heartfelt invitation to those who were once ousted, such as Afoko and Kyerematen.
Amidst calls for unity and reconciliation within the NPP, the party remains in the process of reorganization following its defeat in the recent general election. Member summons to the Disciplinary Committee continue, with former spokesperson Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah and ex-MP Sarah Adwoa Safo being the latest to face disciplinary actions for discussing internal party matters in the public domain.
However, reports indicate that the plea for amnesty by Ken Agyapong has faced resistance within the party, particularly in the Western Region. Opponents of the proposal argue that individuals like Alan Kyerematen, deemed as “traitors and saboteurs,” should not be allowed back into the party fold.
Amidst divergent opinions on the amnesty request, the NPP navigates a delicate balance between unity and accountability as it strives to maintain cohesion and effectiveness within its ranks.
