Police have arrested a man suspected of unlawfully possessing and attempting to sell a firearm in Accra, following intelligence-led operations by the Special Support Unit to the Inspector-General of Police.
The suspect, identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, was arrested on December 29, 2025, at Sodom and Gomorrah after allegedly arranging to meet prospective buyers to complete the sale of an assault rifle. Police said the operation was mounted after information indicated the suspect was in possession of the weapon and intended to dispose of it within the Greater Accra Region.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect presented a box containing a CZ rifle, which he reportedly offered for sale at GH¢35,000. During questioning, he further admitted to having previously transported several pump-action guns to individuals in the Northern Region.
Police said the suspect also disclosed that the firearms were allegedly sourced from an arms dealer operating around the UTC area of Accra. This revelation has triggered expanded investigations aimed at identifying and arresting all persons linked to the suspected illegal arms network.
The firearm was retrieved during the arrest and has been secured as an exhibit for further forensic and investigative processes.
Abdulai Ibrahim remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as efforts continue to dismantle networks involved in the unlawful possession and distribution of firearms. Police say the operation forms part of ongoing measures to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons and enhance public safety across the country.
