Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested two men for the unlawful possession of a large cache of ammunition after intercepting a commercial bus at a security checkpoint.
In a statement, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command said officers on duty at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier arrested the suspects on December 26, 2025. They were identified as Kwame Afram, the driver of the vehicle, and Godfred Essel, the bus mate.
The arrest followed the interception of a Kia Granbird bus, with registration number GT 5771-18, which was travelling from Accra towards Walewale and onward to Paga. A search of the vehicle uncovered two concealed containers holding a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

Police said a further search of the bus led to the recovery of additional items hidden beneath the driver’s seat. These included two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet and a pair of long boots.
The suspects were immediately taken into custody, while the bus and all retrieved exhibits were impounded for further examination. Police say the men are currently assisting with investigations as efforts continue to establish the source and intended destination of the ammunition.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to combating the illegal possession and movement of firearms and ammunition, warning that offenders will be dealt with according to the law as investigations proceed.
