A Berekum Chelsea footballer has been shot and killed after armed robbers ambushed the club’s team bus on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District on Sunday night, police have confirmed.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed in a press release dated Monday, April 13 that the deceased, identified as Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment.
According to the police, the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 pm when a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, carrying about thirty football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea, was travelling from Samreboi to Berekum.
Six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns, blocked the road and attacked the bus.
The driver attempted to flee, causing the bus to skid into a bush, while players and officials scattered into nearby bushes to take cover.
In a statement posted on their Facebook page earlier, Berekum Chelsea said masked men wielding guns and assault rifles “started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse”.
“The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”
The police, in their press release, confirmed thag a second victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of GH¢4,500 during the attack.
Two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to assist investigations.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area and launched a manhunt for the suspects.
The press release issued by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Godwin Ahianyo, who I also the Head of the Command’s Public Affairs Unit, assured the public that “the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time.”
The police urged the public to remain calm and continue to have confidence in law enforcement while investigations continue.
