Authorities in Ghana are working to restore normal traffic flow and identify victims after a fatal fuel tanker accident on a major highway left at least three people dead and several injured, police said in a statement on Saturday.
The incident occurred on 14 February when a tanker carrying petrol from Tema to Kumasi crashed near Ntoaso on the Accra–Suhum dual carriageway. Preliminary investigations indicate the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and explode, with burning fuel splashing onto vehicles travelling behind it.

Police said six vehicles and four motorcycles were engulfed in flames. Two unidentified male bodies were found charred at the scene, while another body was discovered inside one of the burnt vehicles. Four injured victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service stations in Suhum and Nsawam were deployed to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.

Officials said police teams have begun visiting hospitals in surrounding areas to identify victims and contact relatives. Efforts are also under way to remove damaged vehicles from the road to ease heavy traffic congestion caused by the explosion.
Authorities have urged motorists travelling along the busy stretch to slow down and comply fully with traffic directives while emergency operations continue.

The crash is the latest in a series of tanker-related accidents that have raised renewed concerns about road safety and hazardous cargo transport along major highways, particularly routes linking Accra to inland commercial centres.
