Provide clear-cut solution to deal with unemployment of nurses – Group

A youth-oriented pressure group, Dynamic Youth Movement of Ghana, has called on the government to develop a clear-cut solution to resolve the issue of the over 400 unemployed nurses and midwives in the country.

The nurses, who constitute the Coalition of Unemployed Bonded Diploma Nurses in Ghana, have been pressuring government to give them financial clearance to be posted to the various health institutions.

Although the nurses, who have completed their mandatory one-year national service, have been bonded, they have remained home for years. They earlier in the week picketed at the Health Ministry to mount pressure on the government for their immediate employment.Commenting on the issue, the Dynamic Youth Movement of Ghana, said the government was being insensitive to the nurses, some of who it claimed have been home since 2012.

A statement issued by the group and signed by its Convener Edward Tuttor, asked the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemeng Manu to within 14 days, come out with a clear-cut solution address the issue or risk “a series of demonstrations until the nurses are employed.

“The group wants to bring to the notice of all Ghanaians that it stands in firm solidarity with the frustrated Nurses” it said.

It recalled that the Akufo-Addo government prior to the 2016 general elections promised to employ all nurses who have graduated but were yet to be unemployed.

“Going by credible information available to DYMOG, these Nurses have all been Bonded and fully licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NMC). So clearly absolutely nothing stops Government from employing these Nurses to earn a livelihood,” it said.
