Firefighters in Hohoe averted a potential disaster Tuesday after a petrol tanker carrying 54,000 litres of fuel veered off the road and crashed into a high-tension electricity pole, officials said.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the incident occurred on December 9, 2025, when the tanker, registered GT-1140-18, lost control and struck both the pole and a nearby container shop. Municipal Fire Commander DO III Bismark Hosu Porbley led the emergency response.

Before approaching the vehicle, firefighters worked with power officials to isolate electricity to the fallen lines, preventing possible ignition. Crews then used foam concentrate to cool the tanker and suppress vapors, a move authorities say was critical in averting a large-scale explosion.
Police officers from the Hohoe Command assisted firefighters in securing the area and managing traffic as recovery efforts got underway. The tanker was later safely towed from the crash site.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle suffered minor damage to its windscreen and head compartment, and officials confirmed that the fuel remained contained throughout the operation.
The Volta Regional Fire Service commended the swift coordination between firefighters and police, noting that the rapid response prevented what could have been a “catastrophic outcome.”
