Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Mafo has tested positive for Covid-19.
He has, as a result, begun strict compliance to treatment protocols from home.
This was made known by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on Tuesday, July 7 at the bi-weekly press update in Accra.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah said samples of the Senior Minister were taken a couple of weeks ago.
“Senior Minister Osafo Mafo has been informed that his samples given for testing have tested positive.
“He will therefore as of day commence treatment for Covid-19 from home and in consonance with the transparency that we are bringing this, he has instructed that we inform the general public of this accordingly.”
This comes a few days after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo proceeded on a self-isolation at the Presidential Villa at Jubilee House. He is into the third day of his 14-day self-isolation.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Ghana, some key ministers have contracted the disease.
Among these are Minister of Health Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, Minister of Education Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development Daniel Botwe. All have recovered and been discharged.
However, some key public office holders have lost their lives after contracting the disease.
Among these are the Chief Executive of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Anthony KK Sam, who died at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) and Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, who died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
So far, the country has recorded 21,968 cases of the virus.
The Information Minister said the public is advised to continue to strictly observe the preventive etiquettes, particularly social distancing and the wearing of masks.
“These are proven ways to cut the spread and we admonish all to observe them.”
