Some seven (7) Justices of the Court of Appeal, have been nominated by President John Mahama, for consideration for appointment as Supreme Court Justices.
The nomination was announced through a letter signed by Dr Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President, on April 29, 2025,
The nomination is in pursuant to Article 144(2) of the 1992 constitution.
The justices are; Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo and Justice Philip Bright Mensah.
The remaining two are; Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
This news comes in the wake of his recent suspension of the Chief Justice (CJ) Gertrude Esaaba Araba Torkornor, after a prima facie case was found in three petitions seeking her removal.
The nominations, which is in accordance with Article 144 (2) of the 1992 Constitution, are subject to approval by Parliament which is currently on recess.
Viewed as a very bold decision, the nominations come days after a senior justice of the Supreme Court Paul Baffoe-Bonnie automatically became the acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Justice Torkornoo.
The suspension of the CJ has been opposed by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) who have called on the president to reverse, even some it members have disagreed with the body’s position.
Lawyers including private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu who is a member of the Association, has found the move apt saying the president did nothing since he only followed the process as required by the Constitution.
The nominations by the president, is expected to extend the discussions concerning the suspension of the embattled CJ.
