Six applicants have been confirmed dead while several others are injured following a stampede Wednesday morning ahead of the physical screening exercise into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The potential recruits are said to have rushed into the gates of the El Wak Sports Stadium, where the screening was scheduled to be conducted.
Their number seems to have taken a surge, according to a statement from GAF, as all were to report on same day for the Greater Accra Region screening.
Expressing deep regrets about the incident, GAF said the applicants breached protocol while awaiting the exercise to start later in the morning.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of 6 potential recruits and many others injured.”
The injured are currently receiving emergency care at the 37 Military Hospital.
GAF has since suspended the exercise and asked all applicants to return at a date to be communicated.
Arrangements have been made to notify families of the deceased.
