The Supreme Court has quashed a decision by a Tamale High Court for the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to conduct a rerun of the parliamentary elections in Kpandai over alleged irregularities.
The decision by the apex court of the country reinstates New Patriotic Party’s Matthew Nyindam as the Member of Parliament.
It was by a majority decision with only Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang dissenting.
An earlier ruling by the Tamale High Court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Brew-Plange on Monday, November 24 to annul results of the December 7, 2024 elections saw Mr Nyindam declared a persona non grata in Parliament.
Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, however, gave him a grace period after which his seat was declared vacant.
The EC, after receiving notice of the vacancy of the seat from the clerk of Parliament, announced Tuesday, December 30 as date for the rerun.
However, a decision by Mr Nyindam to escalate the case to the Supreme Court by seeking an appeal saw a suspension of all activities regarding the rerun.
Speaking to the press after the Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday, January 28, Mr Nyindam expressed gratitude to all and sundry, indicating that “the Supreme Court has affirmed the will of the people and I am most grateful to them”.
“I also want to thank the party from the head to the bottom for the support they have given me and the people of Kpandai.
“I also want to thank His Excellency, the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the support he has given me throughout and I am most grateful.
“I know that by the will of God he will serve this great nation once again.”
