The Tema Regional Police Command has foiled an armed robbery attack at Afienya-Mataheko in the early hours of Monday, 29 December 2025, following an intelligence-led operation.
According to a police press release, the Police Intelligence Directorate in the Tema Region on Friday, 27 December received credible information that a group of suspected armed robbers was planning attacks within the Tema Metropolis and surrounding areas. Officers were subsequently deployed and placed the suspects under surveillance.
At about 1 a.m. on Monday, police officers spotted four suspected robbers attempting to break into a residential property at Afienya-Mataheko. When the officers moved in, they were met with gunfire, leading to an exchange of fire.
During the encounter, all four suspects sustained gunshot wounds. Three of them, identified as Kwabena Azuwebi, also known as “Lastman”, Yaro Bawku and Faisal, were rushed to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. The fourth suspect, Kassim Hussein, was later recaptured and taken to hospital for treatment but died while receiving medical care.
Police retrieved an AK-47 rifle, a Taurus pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition, two cutlasses and two motorbikes, one of which was unregistered. All exhibits have been secured for investigations.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy, as investigations continue to trace possible accomplices.
The Tema Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to support police efforts with timely and credible information.
