Former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry under the Mahama-led administration believes there is a total breakdown of law and order in the country under President Akufo-Addo’s government.

According to Murtala Mohammed, “we seem to have a complete total breakdown of the security of Ghana because the lawlessness in the country keeps increasing on daily bases”.

The former Member of Parliament for Nantong Constituency in the Northern Region was commenting on the attack by residents of Somanya in the Yilo krobo Municipal Assembly, on the district police command on TV3’s New Day hosted by Bright Nana Amfoh on Tuesday. The residents vandalised the charge office and burnt down the only patrol vehicle serving the whole district on

The attack follows the arrest of the Assembly Member for the Sarweh electoral area, Ebenezer Adamatey Jones Dendenden by the regional police command in Koforidua for questioning.

The assemblyman was being questioned for allegedly leading a group of residents to demonstrate against the high electricity bills, which resulted in the destruction of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) property last Friday.

Murtala Mohammed said “you live in a country where you have leading members in the government who would defend Delta Force actions and say they will never abandon them. You live in a country where a police officer was manhandled and brutalized at the seat of the government. We have MP who says do not touch the Delta Force”.

He added, “we have litany of such disregard to the security. We have officialdom disregarding the security and if the leaders would do this, what would the followers do?”

He noted that “there can’t be any justifications in taking the laws into their own hands because if we do that we lose respect in certain arms of government”.

Mr. Mohammed who is also former Deputy Information Minister said “the NPP government preaches what they don’t practice. They preach rule of law yet there is lawlessness everywhere in the country”.

On the lynch of a Ghana Armed Forces Captain on detachment duties at Diaso in the Central Region, Mr. Mohammed praised the GAF for not descending on the community but resorting to investigation.

“We need to praise the army for not attacking the community but said they are going to investigate. I think they have done well, because elsewhere, the community would have been a ghost town by now”.

The National Nasara Coordinator for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamal-Deen Abdulai who was also on the show said: “If this lawlessness keeps going on in the country, it should be a worry to us and I will call on the number one gentleman of the country who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Akufo-Addo and the Vice president, Dr. Bawumia, who is also the Chairman of the Police Council, to up our games”.

He also charged the police and the security agencies to also on their games as he called on government to equip them.

“Every meaningful citizen of this country will go against what happened and the police should be pushed up to do their job,” Kamal-Deen said.
