The Ghana Tourism Authority said Monday it is aware of a viral video in which visiting Black Americans allege they were kidnapped and extorted by men claiming to be police officers, prompting swift action from national authorities.
In the video, the visitors allege that individuals dressed as officers stopped their vehicle, detained them briefly and demanded money. The claims circulated widely on social media over the weekend, raising concerns among travelers arriving for the peak holiday season.
The Authority said the matter is already under full investigation by the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority. Officials noted that both agencies are treating the allegations with “urgency and seriousness,” and findings will be communicated once the investigation concludes.
In a statement signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, the Authority urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as the inquiry proceeds. “We encourage everyone to allow the security agencies to complete their work,” the statement said.
The incident comes as Ghana welcomes thousands of international visitors for the annual December in GH festivities, one of the country’s busiest tourism periods. The Tourism Authority emphasized that Ghana remains a safe and trusted destination, adding that security measures across key visitor zones have been reinforced ahead of the season.
Authorities said national law enforcement, tourism regulators and private-sector partners are coordinating to ensure smooth travel, rapid response to complaints and heightened visibility of officers at major attractions and transit points.
The Tourism Authority reassured travelers that support services remain available for anyone needing assistance. Visitors may contact the agency via its hotline at 0579579019 or 030 700 7100, or send WhatsApp messages to 0546352240.
“Ghana remains open, secure and welcoming,” the Authority said, urging visitors to retain confidence in the country’s safety infrastructure despite the circulating video.
The Police Service has not yet released additional details about the individuals involved or the authenticity of the uniforms allegedly worn. Officials say updates will follow as investigators verify the claims and assess whether impersonation, fraud or other criminal conduct occurred.
The Tourism Authority vowed to support the investigative process and maintain transparent communication as more information becomes available.
