The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has held a Right to Information (RTI) sensitisation training for Level 300 Journalism and Public Relations students at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC), aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in future media practice.
The virtual training, conducted on Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, during the students’ New Media class, was delivered via Microsoft Teams and held in two sessions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The initiative forms part of the ministry’s efforts to deepen awareness and effective use of Ghana’s Right to Information Act, particularly among emerging journalists and communication professionals.
The session focused on educating students about the provisions, relevance and practical application of the RTI Act in journalism and public relations. It also sought to equip participants with the skills to request information from public institutions and to encourage responsible use of the law as a tool for accountability and good governance.
Ms. Martha Kakra Donkor, Information Officer at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, led the training. She provided an overview of the RTI Act and its legal framework, highlighting its importance in investigative journalism, public interest reporting and ethical public relations practice. Ms. Donkor also explained the procedures for submitting RTI requests, the rights and responsibilities of applicants, and the exemptions and limitations under the law.
Practical examples and case studies relevant to the media and creative arts sectors were discussed to help students apply RTI principles in real-world contexts. The sessions were highly interactive, with participants seeking clarification on challenges commonly encountered when accessing information from public institutions.
The training concluded with a call for students to uphold transparency and accountability as core professional values. Present at the virtual sensitisation were the New Media course lecturer, Dr. Kodwo Jonas Anson-Boateng, his teaching assistant, Mr. Andrews Adunkwah, and Level 300 Journalism and Public Relations students.
