The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has stepped up diplomatic efforts to secure justice in the case of Nana Agyei Ahyia, the Ghanaian student who died under what officials describe as unusual circumstances while studying in Latvia.

In a statement issued on 19 February 2026, the ministry confirmed that a government delegation led by the Foreign Minister travelled to Latvia to engage senior authorities directly overseeing the investigation. Family representatives, including the deceased’s mother and aunt, participated in the meetings, which officials said formed part of Ghana’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

The delegation included forensic specialists, a pathologist, legal advisers and diplomatic staff from Ghana’s embassy in Berlin. Talks were held with Latvian officials including the foreign minister, interior minister, police chiefs, prosecutors and investigators responsible for the case.

According to the ministry, Latvian authorities indicated that investigations remain active and ongoing. They added that, because of the high level of interest from the Ghanaian government, oversight of the inquiry has been elevated to the interior ministry, which has appointed new investigators to ensure what both sides described as credible and thorough outcomes.

During the meetings, the student’s mother formally submitted a statement to investigators for inclusion in the official record. Ghanaian officials also notified their counterparts that additional submissions may be provided if further relevant information becomes available.

The Ghanaian delegation requested that the final investigative report be shared with the family once completed. Latvian authorities raised no objection to the request, the statement said.

Officials in Accra stressed that the government remains committed to pursuing all lawful diplomatic and legal channels to ensure due process. They said regular engagement with Latvian authorities will continue until the matter is resolved.

The ministry also urged the public to refrain from speculation or circulating unverified claims, warning that such actions could undermine ongoing investigative work.

It added that officials remain in close contact with the bereaved family and will continue to provide updates as developments arise. The government, the statement concluded, is determined to safeguard the rights and welfare of all Ghanaians both at home and abroad while seeking truth, transparency and justice in the case.
