The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) says a suspect has been arrested following the circulation of a viral video showing the abuse of a child, assuring the public that investigations are underway.
In a statement, the Ministry said the matter was immediately referred to the Ghana Police Service by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection after the footage surfaced online. Police have since taken the suspect into custody, with investigations ongoing to ensure the case is thoroughly examined and justice served in line with the law.
MoGCSP said it is working closely with the Police Service and other child protection agencies to support the investigation and safeguard the welfare of the affected child. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and preventing abuse, stressing that perpetrators will be held accountable.
The Ministry also cautioned parents, guardians and caregivers against the use of violent disciplinary methods, urging the adoption of non-violent approaches to child upbringing. It emphasized that discipline must never result in physical harm to a child.
Calling child protection a shared responsibility, the Ministry appealed to families, communities, traditional and religious leaders and the wider public to help create safe and caring environments where children can grow without fear.
MoGCSP urged the public to report suspected cases of abuse through the Domestic Violence Call Centre on 0800-111-222, the Helpline of Hope on 0800-800-800 or 0800-900-900, or the nearest police station.
