The Upper West Regional Police Command says it has arrested nine suspects and recovered four service weapons following a violent mob attack on police officers in the Saawie community in the Jirapa Municipality.
According to a police statement issued Friday, December 5, 2025, about 30 young men attacked officers who were in the community to conduct enquiries, overpowering them, inflicting injuries, and forcibly taking four service rifles and their magazines.
Regional Police Commander DCOP Francis Yiribaare immediately led a reinforcement team to Saawie, rescuing the wounded officers and evacuating them for treatment. Police retrieved all four weapons during the follow-up operation, though efforts are still underway to recover two missing magazines.
Nine suspects alleged to have taken part in the attack have been arrested and are expected to be arraigned.
Police say two of the injured officers have been treated and discharged, while a third officer with a fractured arm has been referred to the Wa Regional Hospital for further care.
DCOP Yiribaare condemned the attack as “heinous,” warning that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated. He urged residents of Saawie and nearby communities to cooperate with investigators and provide any information that may lead to the arrest of additional suspects or the retrieval of outstanding items.
The Command assured the public that steps are being taken to reinforce officer safety while maintaining law and order across the region.
