The Volta Regional Police Command has destroyed 600 sacks of Indian hemp, marking one of the region’s largest narcotics disposal operations in recent years. The destruction took place on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., following a court order issued after the exhibits were tendered during trial.
According to police, the substances were seized in 2022 in the case of The Republic v. Yao Kwadwo, also known as Wallako, and two others. The sacks contained a combined weight of 47,530 kilograms of cannabis, with an estimated face value of approximately 4.2 billion Ghana cedis.
The Ho Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Felix Datsumor Esq., authorized the destruction after concluding years of proceedings. The exercise was supervised by Circuit Court Registrar Moses Dzansi, State Attorney Joseph Opusomah, Daniel John Pekyi of the Narcotics Control Commission, and Emmanuel Mensah Gbekor of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The exhibits were transported under heavy security and completely burnt at the Klefe dumping site in Ho at about 10:30 p.m. Police, National Security officers and members of the media were present to ensure transparency and adherence to legal procedures.
The Volta Regional Police Command said the operation underscores its determination to combat drug trafficking and prevent large-scale narcotics from re-entering communities. In a statement signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, the Command thanked stakeholders for their cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing anti-drug efforts.
Authorities say the destruction exercise is part of broader national measures to curb narcotics-related crime and demonstrate the state’s resolve in enforcing drug control laws.
