The Western North Regional Police Command has arrested five men suspected of carrying out multiple robbery attacks in and around Sefwi Bekwai, authorities said in a statement Tuesday.
The suspects identified as Iddrisu Abdalla, 20; Abdul Rahaman Abubakar, 21; Okasha Mohammed, 19; Toffic Bawa, 24; and Richard Gyapong, 35 were picked up during an intelligence-led surveillance operation, according to the command, part of the Ghana Police Service.
Police said three of the suspects were intercepted while riding an unregistered motorbike. When they failed to stop at the Mpesiem Police checkpoint, officers pursued and arrested them. Follow-up operations led investigators to the remaining two suspects.
A search of their residences uncovered a backpack containing talismans, a face mask and several finger rings. Police believe the items may have been used to support their alleged criminal activities.
Preliminary investigations have linked the group to several robbery incidents reported recently within the Bekwai area, officials said. The statement noted that more victims may be identified as the investigation progresses.
All five suspects are in police custody and are assisting investigators. Authorities say additional updates will be provided as the case develops.
