The Catholic Church has reaffirmed its stance that being a Freemason is incompatible with being a true Catholic, as it denounces the membership of high-profile individuals such as Minority Leader Alex Afenyo-Markin and former President John Kufuor.
Despite openly identifying as both Catholics and Freemasons, individuals like the Effutu MP and former President Kufuor have found themselves at odds with the Catholic Church’s clear position on Freemasonry.
The Church asserts that there is no room for dual membership in these two organizations, which they view as fundamentally opposed in their beliefs and values.
In a recent statement, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra emphasized that Freemasonry contradicts key teachings of the Church and diminishes the stature of Jesus Christ by placing him on par with other figures.
This strong condemnation is rooted in the Church’s long-standing position, as outlined in the 1983 “Declaration on Masonic Associations.”
The Church warns that anyone who considers themselves both Catholic and Freemason is engaging in grave sin and cannot partake in the sacraments, including Holy Communion.
The Archbishop of Accra highlighted the irreconcilable differences between Masonic principles and Catholic doctrine, making it clear that Catholics must choose between these conflicting allegiances.
As the issue of Freemasonry resurfaces in public discourse, triggered by recent political inquiries led by figures like Afenyo-Markin, the Church’s uncompromising stance serves as a stark reminder of the inherent conflicts between these two institutions.
The Church’s call for loyalty to Catholic teachings over Freemasonry underscores the gravity of this matter and reinforces the longstanding prohibition on Catholic involvement in Freemasonry.
While Freemasonry has attracted prominent individuals in Ghanaian society, including notable names like the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei II and former Minister of Education Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi, the Church’s position remains crystal clear: Catholics cannot reconcile their faith with Freemasonry’s teachings and practices.
