The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced that work on the footbridges on the Adenta-Madina highway will begin within a week.

A joint statement issued by an Inter-Ministerial Committee made up of sector ministers for Roads and Highways, Transport and Interior on Thursday observed with worry the frequent road accidents on the highway.

The statement came after youth of Adentan mounted a roadblock to protest the incessant deaths, which came to a head on Thursday following the killing of a lady said to be a student of West Africa Senior High School (WASS).

The irate youth burnt tyres and threatened motorists and not even warning shots from the police could deter them.

Unfortunately, a resident was hit in the leg by a stray bullet.

The Committee announced in the statement that the Ghana Police Service will immediately deploy officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate to prevent further deaths.

“Traffic signal lights and street lighting are also to be fixed to improve visibility on the corridor.

“Work on the uncompleted bridges is expected to commence within a week. Work is to be done on an accelerated basis with multiple contractors to ensure quick completion.”

It noted that work had already been ongoing in recent weeks to address the situation and that procurement processes were now near completion.

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has also been tasked to intensify education and sensitisation, which will target drivers and pedestrians.

The statement called for calm as work is done to fix all the six bridges on the corridor.
