NAFCO CEO congratulates National Best Farmer, endorses campaign to promote Ghana Food

Chief Executive Officer of National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Mr. Hanan Abdul-Wahab has congratulated the overall winner of this year’s National Best Farmer Award held in the Volta Regional capital, Ho last week.

Mr. Charles Gyamfi, a commercial farmer with 25 years’ experience from Tano North Municipality in the Ahafo Region emerged winner of the prestigious annual award, taking home GHC 536,000 cheque and a life insurance cover worth GHC 500,000 at a ceremony attended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

Mr. Abdul-Wahab in a message, described the quarter of a century farming journey of Mr. Gyamfi as one demonstrative of sheer commitment, determination and the love for farming.

In a telephone interview from Conakry, Guinea where he is attending an ECOWAS Food Security Reserve meetings, the NAFCO boss said “Mr. Gyamfi’s hard work must inspire many more Ghanaians, especially the youth, to take advantage of laudable government policies and venture into farming; it will certainly pay off someday as it has happened for Mr. Gyamfi”.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abdul-Wahab has welcomed renewed interest in the promotion of Ghanaian foods as a means to reward and bolster the hardwork of Ghanaian farmers.

He has therefore commended the media for leading the way to conscientize and educate Ghanaians about the need to patronize and consume Ghana food including rice grown in Ghana.

He singled-out for praise the Managing Director of Citi FM/TV, Mr. Samuel Atta-Mensah for appointing himself an Ambassador for Ghana rice consumption.

He said his outfit, the National Food Buffer Company will offer the needed the support for the campaign.

He also lauded the leadership exhibited in the promotion of Ghana rice by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his Vice Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia and the Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and his deputies.

According Mr. Abdul-Wahab, government through the Food and Agriculture Ministry has been working to explore several ways to offer relief to rice farmers and millers.

“As a member of the National Technical Committee on Rice Imports, I am aware of several meetings, discussions and negotiations among all relevant stakeholders under the able guidance of the sector Minister to address the challenges we face pertaining to rice grown in Ghana”, he explained.

He called on all Ghanaians to make it a habit to consume locally grown and processed foods in order to create jobs, stabilize the local currency and protect the local farmers and investors.
