The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced an upward review of water and electricity tariffs with effect from Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Electricity tariffs have been increased by 9.86 percent while water has been increased by 15.92 percent for all customers.
According to PURC, the review is a multi-year tariff recieve order (MYTO) for the period of 2026 to 2030.
“This review is separate from the quarterly reviews which consider only operational expenses (OPEX) which are beyond the control of the service provider,” a statement by PURC announcing the latest review said.
Signed by Executive Secretary Dr Shafic Suleman, the statement added that the Commission considered the investment requirements of the utilities, the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of consumers in undertaking the review.
Among the factors considered for the latest review is an evaluation of regulated asset base of the utilities for the period to allow them meet their asset investment requirements.
“There shall, however, be quarterly reviews to these rates adjusting for factors beyond the control of the utility service providers.”
The PURC expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their “support as it continues to address the ever-changing needs of the utility service providers to enable them deliver on their efficient operations”.
It pledged to hold the service providers to strict adherence to its regulatory standards and benchmarks.
“This will be done through the Commission’s continuous monitoring of the operations of the service providers to ensure that value for money and service quality delivery is achieved.”
