Sam George Vows to Oppose Amendment of L.I 2462

Sam Nartey George, the Member of Parliament representing the Ningo Prampram constituency, has pledged to vote against the proposed amendment of the contentious Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462.
The Minister for Communication and Digital Innovation affirmed that his longstanding support, even from his opposition days, has consistently favored the complete repeal rather than amendment of the Environmental Protection regulations concerning mining in forest reserves (L.I 2462). This initiative aims to ensure the protection of forest reserves by prohibiting any mining activities within them.
Highlighting his unwavering stance on the issue, George emphasized, “Forest reserves and water bodies are non-negotiable areas for mining in my personal view. Our nation cannot condone the exploitation of our water bodies and forest reserves. Any legislation allowing such activities is unacceptable to our citizens.”
While acknowledging the need to review the specifics of the proposed amendments, George unequivocally declared his dissent during an interview on TV3’s New Day program on Friday, April 22. His position aligns with the chorus of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) advocating for the complete repeal of L.I 2462 rather than its amendment.
Noting the critical importance of preserving forest reserves and curbing illegal mining activities, George emphasized the need to prioritize environmental conservation efforts. He reiterated the imperative to uphold the ban on mining in forest reserves and water bodies, emphasizing the urgency of decisively addressing illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.
The government’s recent decision to pursue amendments to L.I 2462 has sparked disappointment and criticism from various CSOs, including A Rocha Ghana, EcoConscious Citizens, Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, and other environmental groups. These organizations have reiterated their call for the complete abolition of the Instrument to safeguard forest reserves and combat illegal mining effectively.
As the parliamentary process unfolds, the CSOs have engaged with the Subsidiary Committee to voice their concerns and advocate for the repeal of L.I 2462. George’s steadfast commitment to opposing the amendment reflects his unwavering dedication to protecting the environment and combatting illicit mining practices.
