No Hunger Strike: Feared NPP Poison Plot!

By Gifty Boateng

After seven days in the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) cells, the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as “Chairman Wontumi,” has been released.

But his incarceration was far from a hunger strike, as desperate NPP propaganda had claimed.

The New Republic can exclusively reveal that Wontumi was on a self-imposed, paranoid diet, driven by a chilling fear of being poisoned by his own party members.

Deep-throat sources within the National Intelligence Bureau paint a shocking picture: Wontumi ate, but with extreme caution, convinced that elements within the NPP were out to harm him. This revelation shatters the narrative peddled by NPP MPs like Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who insinuated Wontumi was on a hunger strike.

A Menu of Suspicion:

Since his dramatic arrest on Tuesday, May 27th, Wontumi maintained a highly restrictive personal menu: a staggering four boiled eggs for breakfast, three for lunch, and a garden salad for dinner.

Crucially, he flatly refused any food brought in from outside, relying solely on meals prepared by the Bureau of National Intelligence (NIB).

Sources confirm Wontumi, gripped by fear, even peeled the eggs himself to prevent the insertion of “foreign material” and personally prepared his own salads.

The Tamale Shadow:

This extreme caution, we are told, stems from a terrifying allegation made by Wontumi himself: that he was poisoned alongside the late Ejisu MP, John Kumah, in

Tamale back in 2024.

Kumah tragically died after allegedly consuming “Tuo Zaafi with guinea fowl” at an NPP presidential primaries event. Wontumi, however, miraculously survived, first making this explosive claim on his own Wontumi TV shortly after Kumah’s demise.

The political ramifications are stark. Kumah was a potential Vice Presidential candidate, a slot eventually filled by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (“Napo”), with whom Wontumi reportedly shares a strained relationship.

NPP Cannibalism Exposed:

Wontumi’s fears are not unfounded, as his detention has been met with open jubilation by some NPP members.

Former Fomena Chairman, Kwasi Nti Asamoah, publicly launched a scathing attack, accusing Wontumi of seizing state contracts, including an Exim Bank loan for maize cultivation, without fulfilling them. Nti Asamoah sensationally alleged that Wontumi and his aide, Andy Owusu, used “dollars to snatch people’s wives.”

Further exposing the party’s internal rot, Alex Tetteh of Citizen Eye Ghana, a known loyalist of 2028 presidential hopeful Ken Agyapong, has brazenly bragged about tipping off security services to Wontumi’s whereabouts, leading to a National Security raid on his Kumasi home.

Tetteh has even flaunted details of Wontumi’s luxury car collection – G Wagons, Jaguars, Corvettes, and Ferraris – seemingly reveling in his rival’s predicament.

Bail Battleground: Bawumia vs. Bryan Acheampong?

FrontPage Africa has learned of high-stakes political maneuvering that almost secured Wontumi’s release last Friday, May 30th, but for the fierce rivalry among the party’s flagbearer hopefuls. Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi successfully arranged for MP and former Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, to stand as surety for the GH¢50 million bail.

This move was widely interpreted as Acheampong’s strategic play for the 2028 NPP presidential primaries.

However, the Bawumia camp, in a swift and ruthless counter-move, reportedly dispatched NPP lawyer Gary Nimako to court to slash the bail condition, a move seen as an attempt to “take the shine” off Bryan Acheampong. Curiously, Nimako abruptly withdrew his motion on Monday, June 2, 2025, upon Wontumi’s instruction, despite the hearing being slated for the same day.

This bizarre turn of events made the entire exercise appear to be a whimsical attempt to stall the original bail process.

As Wontumi languished in EOCO cells, spending the weekend behind bars, the internecine battles within the NPP continued to intensify, with frightening implications for the party’s future. The New Republic will continue to bring you the full, unvarnished truth.
