Properties were destroyed and lives were lost as a result of the explosion

The nation’s disaster management organization has confirmed that Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School was affected by last weekend’s explosion at Atomic Junction in Accra.

The Greater Accra Region Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (Nadmo), Archibald Cobbina, told MG News’ Catherine Frimpongmaa on Wednesday that a team has been dispatched to the school to ascertain the extent of damage.

Earlier reports of Saturday’s deadly explosion affecting Presec-Legon were vehemently dismissed by the Old Boys, who claimed the students were evacuated without injuries to any of them.

“About 400 meters, roughly about 1.5 km away from the North Legon area, we had impact. Same as the Rawlings Circle part of the road.”

Presec lies on the east of surface zero of the disaster.

Mr Cobbina insists some students were even hospitalized at the University Hospital in Legon as a result of effects of the fire.

About 20 students were admitted at the hospital in Legon, he said.

From Nadmo, 200 louvre blades of houses one to five were broken, the PTA and Visual Arts blocks were affected while ceilings and lighting systems of a number of blocks were damaged.

Seven people including a Net 2 Television cameraman lost their lives while about 132 persons were injured.

Mr Cobbina says an emergency post consisting of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, Nadmo, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) among other bodies has been mounted near surface zero of the disaster.

The Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is leading the team, he confirmed.

The Nadmo regional director called for psychological care for all those traumatised in one way or the other by the disaster.

He said the emergency post is registering the surviving victims of the disaster.

So far 181 have come to register in response to calls, Mr Cobbina said, with 178 registered from their homes.

“We are yet to crosscheck between those that we took from the homes and those who came here to find those who have double-registered.”

From the records so far, out of the 14 injured persons on admission at the Madina Polyclinic, all have been treated and discharged.

At the University Hospital in Legon, two are still on admission with 33 treated and discharged.

At the 37 Military Hospital, out of the 40 victims, 11 are still on admission while 27 have been discharged. Two died.

Others were taken to the Police Hospital and the Pentecost Hospital.
