The Weija Divisional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl, whose name has been given as Celestine Adonteng, Kokrobite, a suburb of Accra.
The deceased was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse by her father, Isaac Adonteng, for allegedly taking food belonging to her younger sibling.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 54-year-old suspect, a mason, assaulted his daughter with a cane, a metal pipe and other objects.
Despite the multiple injuries the victim sustained, the suspect failed to seek medical care and kept her confined in a room.
Acting on a complaint, police proceeded to the residence only to find the victim in the room unconscious.
She was then rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body has since been deposited at the mogue for preservation and autopsy.
Upon a search in the room of the suspect, a cutlass and the metal pipe supposedly used for the crime were found.
He is in police custody to assist with investigations.
“The Accra Regional Command strongly cautions parents and guardians against the use of excessive force in correcting children as such actions are unlawful and can lead to tragic outcomes,” a press release issued by the police said.
“The Command urges the public to report all forms of child abuse and domestic violence promptly for swift intervention and protection of victims.”
