Twelve tertiary students and three instructors have been rewarded at the Huawei National ICT Training and Awards ceremony held in Accra.
The 12 winners who were from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Accra Technical University, will go on a training trip to China and other capacity-development rewards.
They also received the latest Huawei smartphones and other devices including the Matebook, internship opportunities as part of their prize-package.
More than 500 ICT and engineering students from top universities in Ghana competed in the global ICT talent competition this year.
The Huawei ICT Competition is a global competition for universities and colleges students with ICT background and it is carried out at the national, regional and global levels.
The competition aims at driving the development of high-quality ICT talents for industries and continues providing future driving forces and active participants for digital transformation, and also seeks to promote efficient mapping of talents supply and demand for a sustainable talent ecosystem.
Last year, three students from the KNUST emerged as top best three students from Africa in the global Huawei ICT Competition, something that gave Ghana more slots this year.
Meanwhile, three students and a lecturer of the KNUST have been unveiled to represent Ghana at the Regional Competition in South Africa and go on to represent Ghana at the global stage.
Joshua Ofori Boateng, Gerald Philip Bassah, Seffah-Duodo Timothy and Dr. Kwasi Opare a lecturer of the same the university.
Huawei has been at the forefront of promoting and offering opportunities for university students in new ICT in Ghana. The company has been committed to continuously carrying out the ICT Talents Development program to groom more ICT talents in Ghana.
Its chief executive Tommy Zhou said in 2018, Huawei introduced two flagship ICT oriented initiatives to harness and develop Ghana’s ICT talents.
These programmes, he mentioned as the Huawei ICT Competition and the Huawei National ICT Training Programmes.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for communications Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, said government was initiating pragmatic programmes and policies to improve ICT infrastructure to turn around the fortunes of the country’s knowledge-based society.
She reiterated government commitment to invest more resources to development ICT in all sectors of the economy.
Her outfit she said, is implementing more digital initiatives to make Ghana the ICT Hub in the West African sub-region.
