Deputy Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum has stated that although there have been demonstrations in the past at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), none of such had resulted in the destruction of school property.
According to the Deputy Minister, who was speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise, regardless of how agitated students feel, they should not be compelled to destroy school property, adding that vandalism ought not to be tolerated.
“Even if they are oppressed and repressed they shouldn’t destroy the school’s limited property, and that, that is something that under no circumstance should be contemplated.
“Destruction of properties takes away the sympathy from you. We understand the frustration of the KNUST students but we cannot justify vandalism.
“Vandalism should not be tolerated, it cannot be justified by any stretch of imagination,” he told the host Winston Amoah.
According to Dr. Adutwum, management of the university should understand that they would not always win in their decision-making, and that as leaders, they should know how to deal with the students they serve.
He also cautioned students to also understand that things might not always go their way, and that resorting to vandalism will take away sympathy.
On Monday, students of the KNUST embarked on a demonstration to protest alleged brutalities against them.

However, the demonstration led to the vandalism of some school property, a situation which has led to the school being closed down indefinitely.
Management of the university together with the leadership of the school is currently engaging government on the way forward to resolving the issue.
