The former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asante Akim North constituency, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, recently disclosed a harrowing experience of being poisoned due to his active participation in the #KenMustGo advocacy campaign.
Appiah-Kubi, who was defeated in the recent general election by an independent candidate, linked the poisoning incident to his vocal stance in 2022 calling for the removal of then Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, citing mismanagement of the economy under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
During a live television appearance on Joy News channel, the ex-deputy minister highlighted the repercussions he faced for his advocacy efforts, alleging that the government, specifically the New Patriotic Party (NPP), targeted him following his crusade.
He shared his gratitude for surviving the poisoning ordeal but emphasized the challenges he endured as a result of his outspokenness, attributing his survival to divine intervention.
Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the accuracy of reports surrounding the poisoning incident that circulated in the media, corroborating details such as the medical professionals involved and his treatment process.
He also recounted a subsequent attempt to relocate him while seeking medical treatment, which was thwarted by his wife based on prior warnings.
Furthermore, the former MP hinted at a possible link between the poisoning incident and his electoral defeat, suggesting that the relentless pursuit by his attackers might have impacted the outcome of the election.
Notably, another member of the advocacy group, MP Eugene Boakye Antwi from the Subin constituency, faced a similar fate by losing in the NPP parliamentary primaries.
Appiah-Kubi’s revelation sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals in the political arena when advocating for change, underscoring the risks associated with speaking out against the establishment.
