Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber has announced lifetime suspensions of Ghanaian Yaw Yeboah and Ghanaian-born Derrick Jones Amaniampong.
The decision follows an extensive investigation into gambling violations.
It marks one of the most severe disciplinary actions in the league’s history, effectively ending the MLS careers of both players.
The inquiry was conducted by the MLS in conjunction with independent integrity monitors and the law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP.
It revealed that both players engaged in “extensive” gambling on soccer matches, including games involving their own clubs.
The investigation was triggered in October 2025, when Yeboah was then with LAFC and Amaniampong was with Columbus Crew.
The two were placed on administrative leave after suspicious betting patterns were identified.
The investigative report highlighted several critical violations of the MLS Integrity Policy.
Both players were found to have wagered on multiple MLS matches during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
On October 19, 2024, for instance, both players reportedly placed bets on Jones to receive a yellow card during a match between the Columbus Crew and the New York Red Bulls.
Jones was cautioned by the referee in the 35th minute of that game.
MLS determined the pair likely shared non-public information with outside bettors to influence gambling outcomes.
While the investigation found clear evidence of individual misconduct, officials stated there is currently no evidence that the final scores or outcomes of any matches were compromised.
“The integrity of our competition is the foundation of Major League Soccer,” Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement.
“While we take no pleasure in these actions, the evidence of intentional rule violations left no alternative. We will continue to work with our gambling integrity partners to ensure the game remains fair and transparent.”
