Final year Senior High School (SHS) students writing this year’s WASSCE in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis of the Western Region say they remain optimistic despite the Covid-19 scare in some schools. Meanwhile, those who tested positive for Covid-19 have all returned to school for the exams. A total of 24,332 final year students are writing this year’s examinations in the Western and Western North regions. In the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, some 6,192 students are writing the exams. The Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Daniel Pondei, got all scared while being questioned by a committee in Nigeria’s House of Representatives when he slumped forward in his chair. He was answering questions on mismanagement of funds but collapsed on live TV while facing lawmakers. Mr Pondei recovered a few minutes later but had to be sent to a near-by health facility. A mother who has her son at an isolation centre in Swedru, Maame Effua, has said the oxygen placed on her son while he was being transported from the Ridge Hospital after showing signs of Covid-19 got finished on their way. A police officer by name Abdul Rashid has died of gunshot wounds sustained at his residence at Abeka Lapaz in Accra. It unclear what or who may be behind the fatal incident on Sunday, July 19. But the pistol used was retrieved by investigators and it is in police custody. “A sister of the deceased, 21-year-old Shakira Nasir who resided with the deceased and was present at the time of the incident is also in police custody, assisting with the investigation,” the police said on Monday, July 20. Dozens of barrels of diesel, a boat, chamfan generator and other mining equipment worth thousands of Ghana Cedis have been burnt on the River Offin enclave in the Upper Denkyira East District of the Central Region. The equipment were seized from illegal miners on the River Offin by the Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana (SSMAG) in collaboration with Operation Vanguard and Galamstop. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be in the Eastern Region capital of Koforidua on Wednesday, July 22 for a sod-cutting ceremony. The ceremony is to kick-start work on the construction of the new Eastern Regional Hospital.
