There has been a downward review of fees and charges by the University of Ghana, Legon following a meeting held on Thursday, January 8. The meeting, which had in attendance officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), was chaired by a Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Apaak. The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) says persistent insecurity and selective accountability have weakened public confidence in governance one year into President John Dramani Mahama’s presidency. The Government has announced that approximately $1.470 billion was paid at the end of last year to “rescue and restore Ghana’s energy sector”. According to a press release issued on Monday, January 12 by the Ministry of Finance, the payment covers the World Bank Partial Risk Guarantee, outstanding gas invoices owed ENI and Vitol for electricity generation as well as legacy debts to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The debt on the partial risk guarantee (PRG) was $597.15 million, inclusive of interest, while that on the gas invoices was $480 million. A total of $393 million was settled with the IPPs.…

The Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC has confirmed the arrest of former Minister of Finance, Kenneth Ofori-Atta, by the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) in the United States. Nine suspects have been remanded into prison custody over an alleged assault on police officers in Obuasi as captured in a viral video.
