After it became clear to the world, who hosts the 2026 world cup, it may have been established that Africans “hate” Africa progress. We are know the glory, the prestigious football tournament brings to a nation and to an extreme the continent whose nation will be given the nod to host the world cup. If the benefit of hosting a world cup is establish, then why did some Africa nations voted against their own at the FIFA Executive congress which was held in Russia last Wednesday? Does the action taken by these African nations who rejected Morocco’s bid cement the…
Croatia made a winning World Cup start against Nigeria, as Oghenekaro Etebo’s own goal and a Luka Modric penalty decided a poor Group D match in Kaliningrad. Etebo, who joined Stoke City from Portuguese club Feirense for £6.35m on Monday, turned Modric’s first-half corner into his own net after Ante Rebic and Mario Mandzukic had both got touches. Modric then converted a 71st-minute penalty – Croatia’s first shot on target – after William Troost-Ekong had manhandled Mandzukic at a corner. Nigeria offered little attacking threat, although Dejan Lovren blocked Alex Iwobi’s shot just before half-time, and Odion Ighalo glanced a…
Member of Parliament for Mpraeso Constituency Seth Kwame Acheampong has admonished former president John Dramani Mahama to better stay off talking about the economy. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP says he is advising him as a senior brother. This advice comes in the wake of the former president’s mockery of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in a tweet over the week. In the tweet, Ghana’s fourth president in the Fourth Republic posted a video of Dr Bawumia lashing out at the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the depreciation of the domestic currency, Cedi, to the US Dollar.…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Muslim leaders to ensure that as many of their girl children as possible are educated. “I appeal to you to pay as much attention to the education of your female children as you do to the education of your male children.” The President made this appeal while speaking on Friday during the annual Eid-ul-Fitr prayers. Thousands of Muslims including the Chief Imam and the Minister of Inner City and Zongo Development congregated at the Independence Square for the prayers. Addressing the gathering, President Akufo-Addo expressed his government’s commitment to making education accessible…
McDonald’s will replace plastic straws with paper ones in all its UK and Ireland restaurants, starting from September. It is the latest company to opt out of some single-use plastic products which can take hundreds of years to decompose if not recycled. The restaurant chain uses 1.8 million straws a day in the UK. “Reflecting the broader public debate, our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws,” the firm said. This decision follows a successful trial in selected restaurants earlier this year. The move to paper straws will be completed next year. Environment Secretary Michael Gove…
The 2018 World Cup opened in spectacular fashion as Russia defied their recent poor form to smash five past Saudi Arabia and record the biggest win by the host nation in the opening game of a World Cup since 1934. Stanislav Cherchesov’s team had not won in their past seven matches and had been criticised from all sides, including a series of barbed comments from Russian president Vladimir Putin. But in front of a largely partisan crowd of 78,011 at the Luzhniki Stadium they never looked in danger against a naïve Green Falcons’ side that seemed only too willing to…
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is not happy with the National Teaching Council (NTC) for initiating moves to register teachers for the licensure exams. Reports say teachers are being registered for next month’s exams at a cost of GH¢220 per candidate. The move is part of a scheme to have all teachers in Ghana licensed. But speaking in an interview with TV3’s Daniel Opoku on Thursday, NAGRAT’s National President, Eric Angel Carbonu, said: “We see this as a rip-off, absolutely unnecessary.” He explained that the areas of examination for the teachers have all been covered in the curriculum…
The Queen and Duchess of Sussex are in Cheshire for their first royal engagement together. Her Majesty and newly-married Meghan are officially opening the Mersey Gateway Bridge and Chester’s Storyhouse Theatre. They will then attend a lunch at Chester Town Hall as guests of the city council. It is the first time the duchess has attended an event with the Queen without her husband Prince Harry. Thousands of people were already waiting at the venues hours before the royal pair arrived, with stalls set up on the streets selling flags and souvenirs. The Queen and duchess were greeted by hundreds…
President of IMANI-Ghana Franklin Cudjoe has taken a swipe at the Ministry of Communications in its response to a request by some 22 civil society groups to be furnished with all documents on the $178.8 million Kelni-GVG contract. The civil society organisations, under umbrella body Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, wrote to the Ministry on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, requesting the contract documents on traffic-monitoring to be carried out by Kelni-GVG. But in its response dated Monday, June 11, 2018, the Ministry acknowledged receipt of the letter but wanted more time to get the requested documents. “We are currently in the process…
The Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has disclosed that changes have been made to the original physical specifications of the Kelni-GVG contract with government as per “belated” demands by the telecommunication networks. As per the changes, a further layer of protection and security has been added and that will ensure that only signaling information needed for purposes of traffic monitoring will be received by the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the implementing bodies. “No other information – either voice, SMS, video or data – will be received by Kelni-GVG servers,” Mrs Owusu-Ekuful explained in a…
