The head of the United Nations has demanded “the truth” over the disappearance of the Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Secretary General Antonio Guterres told the BBC he feared such disappearances would happen more regularly and become a “new normal”. Mr Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, vanished on 2 October after visiting its consulate in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia says accusations it ordered his killing there are “lies”. Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, in quotes reported by the official Saudi Press Agency in Friday, said the kingdom was also keen to uncover “the whole…
Doctors’ use of Caesarean section to deliver babies has nearly doubled in 15 years to reach “alarming” proportions in some countries, a study says. Rates surged from about 16 million births (12%) in 2000 to an estimated 29.7 million (21%) in 2015, the report in the medical journal The Lancet said. The nation with the highest rate for using the surgery to assist childbirth is the Dominican Republic with 58.1%. Doctors say in many cases the use of the medical procedure is unjustified. Until recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggested that Caesarean section – or C-section – rates of…
A labour expert has made a call for the complete scrapping of the current payment structure for Ghana’s public sector. Ben Arthur says payment by effort and time should be done away with for payment by performance. According to him, the latter is what is enshrined the 1992 Constitution. Mr Arthur made these remarks on TV3’s Midday Live on Friday. He was speaking in an interview on the sit-down strike declared by staff of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). Staff, who began the strike on Thursday, claim they are worse off with the advent of the Single Spine…
Whose money is it when men give to God in church? If it’s God’s, do men need to give a hoot about how it is used? If it’s men’s, does the church need to account periodically to those who give? It’s awkward when modern church leaders try to make it look as though one is being too nosy or carnal when they demand accountability from the church. In the wake of so many “one-man” churches, it’s rare to see many church today periodically brief its members on its financial activities. Irony is when the same church that urges government to…

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the lives of Ghanaians are intimately linked with the francophone world, and Ghana’s membership of La Francophonie should serve as a big boost to addressing some of the country’s mutual concerns. With French set to become one of the world’s most commonly spoken languages, and with French speakers rising to over 700 million, of which 80% will be in Africa, President Akufo-Addo noted that the lives of Ghanaians, therefore, are intimately linked with the Francophone world. “As a country bordered to the north, east and west by French-speaking countries, and to the south by…
