Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar stole the show, and most of the awards, at the 2018 Grammys. Mars provided the night’s big upset, taking the album of the year trophy that most critics assumed would go to Lamar’s rap tour de force, Damn. In the end, voters found Mars’s crowd-pleasing R&B more palatable, while Lamar dominated the rap categories. Alessia Cara won best new artist – making her the only female artist to win a major prize. Stars like Lady Gaga, Kesha, Lorde and SZA were overlooked, with only 17 awards (out of a total of 86) going to women…

Ghanaian boxer Emmanuel ‘The Game Boy’ Tagoe successfully defended his IBO Lightweight title after technically knocking out his Argentine opponent, Fernando Saucedo. In a bout full of showboating in the ring by the Ghanaian and several complaints by the South American, experienced referee Roger Barnor stopped hostilities in Round 10, much to the surprise of patrons. Tagoe had hit the back of Saucedo’s head in what many considered illegal in the noble sport of self defence. It was at least the third time Tagoe’s punch had landed there, triggering complaints from Saucedo’s corner men after the first round. But all…

Back in primary school, I bought my first football ever― a “Case 5” football. Possessing one of such added a lot to one’s “social standing” and God knows how long I saved and fasted to make this dream come true. Indeed, I had to tame my hunger to buy this pleasure. After buying this seemingly priceless asset, I treated it pricelessly. Every morning, I would clean it so well and put it in my bag before leaving for school. In the evening, I would bathe it like a baby and sleep with it by my side. All through the day,…
President Donald Trump has told global finance leaders he will always put the US first when it comes to trade, but “that does not mean America alone”. “The US is open for business,” he said in his inaugural address to the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday. But he continued to attack “predatory” trade practices, warning partners that the US would not tolerate unfair trade. Mr Trump’s election campaign centred on America First, aiming to protect local manufacturers from foreign competition. This policy appeared to contradict the Davos conference’s goal of promoting globalisation and co-operation. Mr Trump lauded the…

A severe drought has forced the city’s municipality to limit consumption to 50 litres (11 gallons) per person per day. Officials are urging people to switch off their toilet cisterns and limit flushing to conserve water. The head of the provincial government said if the taps ran dry it would be “the disaster above all disasters”. Helen Zille said it was still possible to avoid what has become known as Day…
