Ghanaian artiste Afro Moses has gotten rid of some centimeters of his dreadlocks in a gesture to honour Hugh Masekela.
The legendary South African trumpeter died on Tuesday after a long battle with prostate cancer. A private funeral is expected to be held in his honour in accordance with his wishes.
In an interview on a special edition of 3FM’s Urban Blend presented by Francis Doku on Friday, Afro Moses, popularly known as the African James Brown, said he cut some of his long hair off after he heard the news about Masekela’s demise.
According to him, his locks were getting too long and he wanted an occasion to cut some off.
Therefore, he said, the death of Masekela presented him an opportunity to do that as the Father of South African Jazz was an inspiration to him.
“I loved him because he is one of my inspirations.”
Also known as Moses O’Jah, Afro Moses called for more support for traditional music, saying that is what foreigners, especially Europeans and Americans, love.
Mostly based in Australia, the high-energy stage showman has travelled far and wide with his eerie kind of music which has lifted high the flag of Ghana.
