Gilbert Baker, a San-Francisco-based artist who created the rainbow flag as a symbol for the gay community, has died aged 65, US media report. The San Francisco Chronicle said Mr Baker died in his sleep at his home in New York on Thursday night. He initially designed an eight-colour flag in 1978 for the city’s gay freedom day, the precursor to the modern pride parade. The rainbow flag has been raised in central San Francisco to honour him. China has introduced new restrictions in the far western region of Xinjiang in what it describes as a campaign against Islamist extremism. The measures include prohibiting “abnormally” long beards, the wearing of veils in public places and refusing to watch state television. Xinjiang is the homeland of the Uighurs, a traditionally Muslim group who say they face discrimination. Recent years have seen bloody clashes in the region. Demonstrators in Paraguay have set fire to the country’s congress amid violent protests against a bill that would let the president seek re-election. The head of the main opposition party said an activist had been shot dead. The country’s 1992 constitution, introduced after 35 years of dictatorship, limits the president to a single five-year term. An Accra Human Rights court has set aside the 2012 dismissal of DSP Gifty Mawuenyega Tehoda from the Ghana Police Service. The Inspector General of Police has, therefore, been ordered to reinstate the former head of the Commercial Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
