Anti-apartheid struggle veterans have also called on the African National Congress (ANC) to recall the president. Mr Zuma has been under growing pressure following a major cabinet reshuffle which included the sacking of respected Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. That led to South Africa’s credit rating being cut to junk status putting more pressure on a troubled economy. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), a key…
Once upon a time there were no televisions in most homes in Ghana, nearly every Ghanaian trooped to the cinemas to be entertained. According to one of Ghana’s foremost cinematographer, filmmaker and photographer, Rev Dr Chris Tsui Hesse, the cinemas generated huge income for the Ghanaian economy. Today these state-owned cinemas are a pale shadow of themselves. They have been abandoned, and left to deteriorate. If this is how we…

EPL title race thrown open Conventional wisdom is that the English Premier League title is Chelsea’s to lose. Crystal Palace ripped that conventional wisdom apart on Sunday with a well executed comeback win over Chelsea. The Blues still sit pretty on the top of the standings with a seven point advantage over closest rivals Tottenham Hotspurs. It is one news item that has succeeded securing a spot on almost every aspect of Ghana’s news media. Ordinarily, topical issues in my country take at most a week to be talked about in the media then we find it a ‘resting’ place. However, like the dreaded disease called Ebola, illegal mining popularly referred to as ‘Galamsey’ in the Ghanaian parlance has had the young and the old chatting around it with a great concern. Pressure group, Occupy Ghana in its own way has waged war on the illicit activity that has seen many of our water bodies extremely…

South Africa’s credit rating has been cut to junk status by the ratings agency S&P Global. The agency said that political upheaval, including the recent sacking of finance minister Pravin Gordhan, was endangering the economy. S&P also expressed concern over government debt, and in particular the expense of supporting the state energy firm Eskom. The news put more pressure on the rand, which was down 2% against the dollar. The sacking of Mr Gordhan, seen as a safe pair of hands and with a reputation for financial prudence, led to a 4% fall in the rand on Friday and prompted…
