Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has provided a detailed explanation for his decision to withdraw the charges against former COCOBOD Chief Executive Dr. Stephen Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo. He maintained that the grounds for their prosecution were untenable, citing significant evidence proving the efficacy of Lithovit liquid fertilizer which is at the centre of the prosecution based on which they were charged for causing financial loss to state. Upon assuming office, Dr. Ayine reviewed prosecutions initiated by his predecessors, Gloria Akuffo and Godfred Yeboah Dame, and made strategic decisions regarding their continuation. He emphasized his…
Upon assumption of office as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, I have taken decisions on certain prosecutions that were instituted by my predecessors, the Honourable Gloria Akuffo and the Honourable Godfred Yeboah Dame. Specifically, I decided to drop the criminal charges laid against certain persons including those who served in the Government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that left office in January 2017. I did so mindful of the fact that I am serving in a government that came to power on the back of promises of exacting accountability from everyone who has served or is serving…

Alhaji Seidu Agongo, the majority shareholder of the now-defunct Heritage Bank, has expressed confidence that his bank could have transformed Ghana’s banking industry with unmatched competition.
A former Deputy Attorney General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, has described President John Mahama’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative as toothless, stating that he would not respond to their call if he’s invited. Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, he remarked, “I see ORAL as a toothless institution without the power to investigate or engage in many activities,” when asked by Sweety Aboache if the initiative could help address corruption in the country. “Martin Kpebu (ORAL Committee member), who just spoke, is a private legal practitioner. He doesn’t have the power to investigate, nor does he have the authority to mount prosecutions. So,…
Over thirty students from Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have been suspended indefinitely. The majority of those suspended are girls, and they are accused of bringing mobile phones to school, in violation of the Ghana Education Service (GES) rules and regulations. Sources within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Directorate of GES indicate that the suspended students are also involved in various immoral activities while at school. A seven-member committee, constituted by the school management to investigate the matter, found all the students guilty of the allegations, leading to their suspension. In recent years, Sawla Senior…
Three Ghanaians have told the BBC of their involvement in the fighting between Islamist insurgents and the military in neighbouring Burkina Faso, describing scenes of sometimes indiscriminate violence and bloody battles. “We are always with the dead. In some battles, I’ve seen 40, 50 or 100 dead people,” one of the men told the BBC. The three, all in their late thirties or early forties, said they had fought in Burkina Faso multiple times since 2018. They crossed the porous 550km-long (340-mile) border between the two countries, without being detected by the security forces. They denied being primarily motivated by…
Renowned legal scholar and governance advocate, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has waded into the ongoing debate surrounding the discontinuation of prosecutions involving pro-NDC figures, arguing that the issue should be examined beyond political narratives, with a focus on governance, the rule of law, and the efficiency of the legal system. Prof. Kwaku Asare, popularly known as Kwaku Azar, highlighted the significant delays in these cases, noting that each of them has been in the judicial system for at least seven years. This, he contends, raises fundamental concerns about the sustainability and effectiveness of such prosecutions. “If a case has been…
Heritage Bank’s story began with a man who dared to dream big. He was an ordinary Ghanaian, driven by an extraordinary vision to create a bank that would serve the underbanked and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development. This is Alhaji Seidu Agongo, a well-known Ghanaian philanthropist.
David Ofosu-Dorte, a senior partner at AB & David Africa, has advised the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Sarpong, to prioritize sustainable tax policies over merely meeting International Monetary Fund (IMF) revenue targets. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on “30 Days into Mahama’s Government: What Have We Learnt So Far?”, Ofosu-Dorte emphasized the need for a balanced approach to fiscal management. He acknowledged Sarpong’s competence in leading the GRA but stressed that his focus should be on broadening the tax base and identifying new revenue streams rather than aggressively increasing tax collection to satisfy IMF conditions.…
