The silicone bracelet I’m wearing around my wrist isn’t particularly subtle. But it’s not meant to be. The bright red strap encases a small rectangular rechargeable battery that sits against my wrist and can deliver shocks over 200 volts. Emblazoned on the top is a lightning bolt, so there’s no risk I’ll forget what the device does. My phone says the device is charged and placed to the lowest setting. All that’s left to do is press down on the lightning bolt and give myself a small electric shock. The device I’m describing, called the Pavlok, is a bit controversial.…
It has never been easier to become insta-famous, but for some celebrities, fame and fortune are perennial. Take Diddy: Nearly two decades after appearing on the cover of the first-ever Celebrity 100 issue, Diddy tops FORBES’ annual ranking of the highest-earning entertainers in the world, banking $130 million pretax in our 12-month scoring period. “I ain’t foolin’ around… I’m building assets,” Diddy claimed to FORBES back in 1999. Turns out, he was right: The majority of his 2017 total comes from selling one-third of his Sean John clothing line for an estimated $70 million. Combined with a lucrative Diageo Ciroc vodka partnership and…
Executive Director at the Centre for Regional Integration in Africa, Professor S.K.B Asante has underscored the critical role regional integration plays in fostering economic development of Ghana. Commenting on regional integration issues in Accra, Professor S.K.B Asante explained that effective ECOWAS integration demands participation of all key stakeholders in which the private and civil society organizations must fully participate in all major decision processes. He thus called for the support of civil and private sectors to participate in the integration process and urged the youth of West Africa to imbibe the attitude of integrating Africans through education. Mr. Asante encouraged…
Hajia Ayishetu Seidu the substantive Municipal Chief Executive for the Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Assembly is yet to make her first official visit to her office, thirty days after being sworn in. She garnered 50 out of the 64 total votes cast on May, 13 2017. Security threats including banning her from attending gatherings as guest of honour and threats to make live unbearable for her should she report at her post are among reasons why the first female chief executive of the municipality is yet to report to perform her official duties. When all thought the dust had settled after a…
Renowned actor Majid Michel has rubbished claims that he is professing to be a minister of God because he wants to stay popular in the eyes of Ghanaians. The talented actor in a post on his Instagram page stated emphatically that he did not become a bond-servant of God just to seek attention from people. According to him, serving God is his true calling and not an act of pretence to seek approval or favour from men. “Am I now trying to win the favour and approval of men, or of God? Or am I seeking to please someone? If…
The political chess game of who leads the NDC is hot and alive. Some may shout their voices hoarse that it’s too early but the permutations, prognostications and pontifications are certainly rife. Though it is widely believed that Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has come out to say he wouldn’t contest (assuming this is true), this exercise is simply based on some identifiable potential candidates—whether they’ve announced or not. The well respected and professor emeritus of political commentary Kwaku Baako Jnr., for instance, thinks Haruna Iddrisu should not contest for now. In politics timing is key. Waiting could either go for or…
Kumawood actress Nana Ama McBrown has warned the industry to desist from creating a movie on the late Major Maxwell Mahama. Major Mahama was lynched at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region two weeks ago while on early morning jogging. The booming Kumasi-based film industry is noted for creating stories around big moments and of course controversial personalities. For instance, the industry dominated the headlines in 2013 with the release of Supreme Court 1&2, a movie about the famous election petition case. Others such as Atta Mortuary Man, created around a famous joke by former president Jerry Rawlings, Ama Benyiwaa and…
Eight Month into pregnancy, I felt desperate for help, I needed help to be able to care for my two other children, I needed help especially for my daughter who has cerebral palsy, I needed a care giver. I have spoken to everybody I could think of, colleagues at the office, some friends at church, general friends, family and the usual answer I got was, “It is not easy to come by such persons who are good” I guess everybody was trying their best for me. I finally decided to go online, something that most Ghanaians will frown on, online…
